Discover Osaka’s Unique and Colorful Manhole Covers!

In Osaka City, you can find not only manhole covers featuring designs of Osaka Castle and cherry blossoms, but also unique manhole covers decorated with popular characters and famous tourist attractions in Osaka.

In this article, we introduce the different manhole covers and where you can find them. While sightseeing in Osaka, be sure to take a look down and discover these unique designs beneath your feet.

Osaka-Kansai Expo “Myaku-Myaku”
This manhole cover features “Myaku-Myaku,” the official character of the Osaka-Kansai Expo. According to the Osaka City Government, these manhole covers were installed at around 400 locations throughout the city, including areas around train stations and places with heavy pedestrian traffic. They can also be found in major tourist areas such as JR Osaka Station, Namba Station, and Osaka Castle Park.

Kinnikuman
In collaboration with “Yudetamago” (Rikishi Shimada and Yoshinori Nakai), a manga artist duo from Osaka City, five types of manhole covers featuring characters from Kinnikuman have been installed throughout the city.
Kinnikuman — Location: Inside Osaka Castle Park, in front of the former Hirabayashi Building site
Terryman — Location: America Village
Warsman — Location: Umedakita area
Robin Mask — Location: Shinsekai・Tsutenkaku (photo below)
Kinnikuman Soldier — Location: Inside the grounds of Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine

Rubber Duck
Location: Kitakagaya area
This eye-catching manhole cover features a bright yellow Rubber Duck. It is also currently listed on the official Osaka City website as one of the donated manhole covers.

USJ Donated “Osaka” Design
This is one of the uniquely designed manhole covers donated to Osaka City by Universal Studios Japan LLC, the company that operates Universal Studios Japan.

USJ Donated “Dotonbori” Design
This design is inspired by Dotonbori, one of Osaka’s most famous tourist destinations.

USJ Donated “Universal Studios Japan” Design
This design is themed around Universal Studios Japan.


USJ Donated “Osaka Castle” Design
This design is inspired by Osaka Castle. The five manhole cover designs donated by Universal Studios Japan have been installed at a total of 25 locations throughout Osaka City.
